TV Mounting in South Florida

Your TV ends up level, at the height you actually watch from, on anchors sized for the wall it is hanging on.

Anchors are picked against the combined weight of the bracket and the set, and the level goes on twice before the picture comes on.

My walls are solid concrete
Block is the normal wall here, not the exception. Holes go into the solid face with a hammer drill and take masonry anchors rated well above what they are carrying.

A soundbar bracket hangs off the TV mount or its own anchors, centered on the screen rather than drifting along the shelf under it.
We are moving the TV to another wall
The old bracket comes off, the holes it leaves get filled, and the new spot is laid out for whatever is behind that wall, which is often a different material entirely.

A TV mount asks four to six fasteners to hold a wide, heavy, expensive object away from a wall. Everything that decides whether that works happens before the drill comes out, and it starts with one question: what is actually behind that wall? In Broward and Miami-Dade, the answer is often not what a stud finder says it is.

The furring strip problem

Exterior walls here, and plenty of interior ones, are concrete block laid up with hollow cells and mortar joints running every 16 inches across and every 8 inches up. The drywall over that block is frequently not attached to studs at all. It is screwed to 1x2 or 1x3 wood furring strips nailed flat against the block, leaving roughly a three-quarter inch air gap behind the board.

That gap is where bad TV installs begin. A stud finder reads the furring strips and reports them as studs. Lag screws go into a thin strip of pine held on by masonry nails, and the mount feels solid on the day it goes up. Furring strips were put there to carry drywall. They are not sized to carry a 60 pound television hanging on a swing arm.

The path that works is to drill through the furring and into the block behind it, then bridge the gap with spacers so the bracket bears on hardware instead of crushing the drywall against nothing. Interior partition walls are more familiar territory: wood or metal studs at 16 inches on center with a hollow cavity. Metal studs change the hardware again, because a lag screw driven into thin steel will spin long before it grips, and a mount plate spanning two of them needs anchors chosen for that, not the bag that came in the box.

Anchors sized for the real load

Into wood, a mount wants lag screws at least 5/16 inch in diameter with a couple of inches of thread buried in solid framing, not just biting the edge of a stud.

Into block, it is masonry anchors, either sleeve anchors or heavy concrete screws, set with a hammer drill. Three details decide whether they hold. The hole goes into the solid face of the block and stays off the mortar joints, which are softer and crumble when an anchor expands in them. The hole gets blown and vacuumed clean, because dust packed in the bottom stops the anchor short of full depth, so it never reaches the embedment its rating assumes. And the bit stays square to the wall, because a bit that wanders blows a crater out of the face shell and leaves the anchor with nothing to grab.

Full-motion mounts raise the stakes further. With the arm folded flat, the hardware mostly carries weight straight down. With the arm extended, the same screen is levering the top fasteners straight out of the wall, and pull-out is the direction anchors are weakest in. That is why a full-motion mount wants two stud bays or a full masonry anchor pattern, and never a single stud with a pair of drywall toggles helping out.

Height, angle, and the way you actually watch

The rule is plain: the center of the screen sits at eye level from the seat you use. On a standard sofa that puts screen center somewhere around 40 to 45 inches off the floor, which is lower than most people guess.

Above a fireplace the screen has to go higher, and a tilting mount angled down a few degrees is what keeps a long movie from turning into a neck problem. Rooms here add a second complication. West-facing sliders, screened patios, and glass on two walls throw reflections that no brightness setting will beat. A few degrees of downward tilt often will.

So before a hole exists, the screen outline and its center go on the wall in painter’s tape, and you look at it from the couch. Moving a strip of tape takes a second. Moving four anchors in block takes a patch.

Cords, soundbars, and the finish

Cable management on these jobs means surface-mounted cover: a paintable channel running from behind the screen down to the console, cut to length, leveled, and fastened to the wall rather than trusted to its adhesive strip alone. Painted to match, it reads as trim from a few feet away. Anything that goes inside the wall is a different scope and we refer it out instead of guessing.

Soundbars hang either on a bracket that shares the TV mount or on their own anchors below the screen. Either way they get centered on the screen instead of the wall, and set far enough below the bezel that they do not clip the bottom of the picture from a low seat.

On a screened patio or a covered lanai, the hardware changes. Salt air and year-round humidity will rust plain zinc fasteners while stainless keeps working, and the mount itself should be one built to sit outdoors.

Getting ready for the visit

Have the mount on site with the box open, the hardware bag accounted for, and the instruction sheet still in it. Have the television model number ready so the VESA pattern and the weight rating can be checked against the bracket before anyone commits to a hole. If the set is already unboxed, put the four VESA screws somewhere you can find them, because a missing one stalls an otherwise finished install.

Decide which seat matters most and where the cords need to end up, since those two answers set the screen height and the path the cover takes. Take down whatever is on that wall now, including the old picture hardware. If you are in a condo or an association building, ask in advance whether there are rules about drilling into an exterior or shared wall. That is a much easier conversation to have before the visit than at the door.

    Stud centers get confirmed two ways, and on block we locate the solid face and keep clear of the mortar joints. The screen center goes on the wall in tape and you check it from the couch before a hole exists.

  3. Anchor, level, and dress the cables

    The bracket goes up on hardware matched to that wall, the level goes on the plate and again on the screen, the finished mount gets pulled on, and the cords drop into cover cut to length.

What affects your quote

What the wall is made of
Wood studs, metal studs, bare block, and drywall on furring strips over block all take different hardware and a different amount of drilling.
Mount type and screen size
A low-profile plate on a 43 inch set is not the same work as a long-arm full-motion mount carrying a 75 inch screen and its cable slack.
How far the cords have to travel
A short drop to a console below is quick. Carrying cables sideways to a corner, around trim, or down to the baseboard adds length, corners, and paint matching.
Access to the wall
A clear living room wall is straightforward. A high wall above a fireplace, a stair landing, or a corner packed with furniture takes setup time and a second set of hands.
Whether an old mount comes off first
Taking a bracket down, filling the holes it leaves, and laying out a new position on a different wall is a second piece of work sharing the same visit.

You can buy the mount and the soundbar bracket, or we can pick them up. Matching a mount to your screen weight and your wall type takes time either way.

TV Mounting questions

Can you mount a TV on a concrete block wall?

Yes, and here that is the usual job rather than a special request. The holes are drilled into the solid part of the block with a hammer drill and a carbide bit, never into the mortar joints, and the masonry anchors are sized above the combined weight of the mount and the set.

Can you hide the wires?

We run them in paintable surface cover from behind the screen down to your console, cut to length and fastened so it reads as trim once it is painted to match the wall. Running cable or power inside the wall is a different kind of work and we refer it out.

What height should the TV go?

Yes. The screen comes down, the old bracket comes off, the holes get filled, and the new position is laid out for whatever is behind the new wall. Say which wall you have in mind when you send the photo so both ends get planned.

Will a soundbar mount under the screen?

Most will, either on a bracket that shares the TV mount or on its own anchors just below. Send the soundbar model along with the TV model and the bracket gets confirmed before the visit.
